We deployed our electrical team on board MSC vessel to troubleshoot their generator engine paralleling issue. On board the vessel, Power Management is a must which includes all Power generation and Distribution. Simply power management is, monitoring the power demand and supplying accordingly by taking care withing the safe range considering all the safeties and other necessary conditions. Specially in UMS vessels, it should function automatically. But we always experience system downgrades with the aging of the vessel.
Team boarded the vessel and had initial inspection carried out of the system. No. 2 GE governor replaced with a new one and it was tuned to match the engine by CIAP Professionals.
On further troubleshooting, it was noticed that there were issues with the other governor and one engine was had a power factor issue. GEs were not paralleling in automatic mode and noticed issues with one of the generator control position switches was not in proper position to read the system in automatic mode. Surprisingly no alarm or indication was shown.
Further checks were carried out and rectified the issues, noticed. System was put back to the Automatic Operation mode and offered to the vessel.
