Main Engine, Stuck Cylinder Head removal

Vessel: MV EM AstXXXX

Location: Port Of Colombo

Its Always Good to be on a challenging environment and to acknowledge challenging work. CIAP Team have highly experience and qualified personnel for any given task at any level.

Team CIAP was offered the work which had been unable to perform from vessel’s end. 7S-70MC MAN engine Cylinder head was stuck in place and could not be able to lift up.

Container ships are one of the categories which are having large bore engines and they are on their long-term schedule and there is no any room for Delay at port or when they are even sailing, sometimes they are planned for years ahead and ETA given with strict schedules. With today’s technology and Port Operation, container loading and unloading have become so faster operations. Nowadays it is becoming a rare case to stay more than 14 Hours in other ports than their main Port Of call.

Doing Main engine repairs are becoming very hard with limited Port stay and to make the main engine ready by One Hour Notice Time. But there are cases that ship Engineers had to attempt some repairs with taking risk In shorter port stays.

In that condition there are no room to try and do the work and It should be successful in the first attempt. As we all know, in your sailing life, There are always unexpected things popping up during the work which delays your Normal work. The same thing was happened with EM AstXXXX ship staff that they had to replace the cracked Water jacket in Unit no 4 Cylinder head and they tried their limited Port stay In another ports and their three attempts were unsuccessful due to cylinder head stuck.

Job was offered to Team CIAP and team attended fully geared up. Initial Inspection carried out with ship staff and necessary connection removed and slacken the hydraulic nuts of the cylinder head. After removing nuts noted Most aft two Holding studs were holding the cylinder head against lift. Cylinder head was jacked it up by using hydraulic Jacks while monitoring the deformation and excess tension on the cylinder head holding studs. Used Special treatment liquid to provide slackness between Stud and the stud pocket where we were able to keep stud tension in limits and lift the head against it. Team CIAP was able to Lift up the Cylinder head clear from the studs In three hours and it was a great team effort by all of us including the ship’s staff.

It was a great relief to the ship’s staff and they were able to replace the cylinder head with Spare cylinder head and Thumbs Up to ship staff for believing in us and for the support given. Thank you, Team EM AstXXXX. The Best part, we were able to save both the cylinder head Holding studs and they secured their spare Prepared studs back in position for next Use. Job done and save for the client.

Team CIAP is a Team You can always call us in your hard times .
